As part of the democracy day celebrations, the Governor of Nasarawa State Umaru Tanko Almakura today granted reprieve to about 68 prisoners across all the prison formations in the state.
The highlight of the event was the release of a nursing mother and her little child Ibrahim who were both serving prison terms, the child innocently found himself in jail on account of his mother's incarceration even though he committed no offense at all and was not sentenced to prison by any court
The Governor was touched by the condition of the mother who was observing the fast of Ramadan. He immediately paid her fine and showered the mother and son with gifts. She was released along with 67 prisoners after the governor ordered the payment of their collective fines totaling about four million Naira. All the affected prisoners instantly regained their freedom.
Almakura personally donated five hundred thousand Naira to be shared among the released prisoners as transport fare to their various homes.
And to the prisons, the governor donated five hundred mattresses and five hundred blankets. He also donated medical facilities to the tune of two hundred thousand Naira and the sum of one million Naira for feeding of the fasting prisoners in custody.
This is not the first time the governor extended such
acts of magnanimity to the prison inmates. He paid the fines of ordered the
release of nearly one hundred prisoners last year.
It is also on record that Almakura celebrated his birth day with the inmates two years back and donated trailer loads of beds and beddings to the prisoners on that occasion.
Almakura is a pace setter and trailblazer in such kindness. No state government in the federation has recorded such feat in the grant of amnesty in history. So far , governor Almakura stands out as the only governor who year in year out, grant mass amnesty to prisoners and he always does so, after paying their fines in full to secure their release.
Almakura is no doubt kind and compassionate to the poor, the underprivileged and the incarcerated. May Allah reward him for his kindness, care and compassion. Amin.
