Mission

The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) is a World Bank-assisted project aimed at reducing the vulnerability of Nigeria’s population to soil erosion and associated land degradation. In Nasarawa State, the project is implemented in collaboration with the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Vision

To be a leading model for sustainable environmental management and erosion control in Nasarawa State, where communities are resilient to environmental hazards, and natural resources are protected for future generations

GENERAL OVERVIEW OF NEWMAP-EIB

The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) is a World Bank-assisted project aimed at reducing the vulnerability of Nigeria’s population to soil erosion and associated land degradation. In Nasarawa State, the project is implemented in collaboration with the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Project Objectives

  1. Reduce soil erosion and associated land degradation
  2. Protect lives and livelihoods
  3. Promote sustainable environmental management practices
  4. Enhance community resilience to environmental hazards

Project Components

  1. Erosion control measures (e.g., terracing, reforestation)
  2. Watershed management (e.g., riverbank stabilization, flood control)
  3. Community engagement and awareness-raising
  4. Capacity building and institutional strengthening
  5. Project management and monitoring and evaluation

Target Beneficiaries

  1. Communities in erosion-prone areas
  2. Smallholder farmers
  3. Rural households

4. State and local government agencies responsible for environmental management
