NASARAWA STATE HOSPITALS MANAGEMENT BOARD, LAFIA

ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE

Nasarawa State Hospitals Management Board is a parastatal under the State Ministry of Health saddled with the responsibility of coordinating and managing all General Hospitals in Nasarawa State. This includes the responsibility of staffing, infrastructural development and the provision of state of the art equipment that will ensure uninterrupted quality health care delivery in Nasarawa state.

HMB was established following the creation of Nasarawa State from old Plateau state, on 1st October 1996 with takeoff of 13 Hospitals spread across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state, with Headquarters in Lafia.

Presently the Board has 17 General Hospitals being responsible for managing the activities of the hospital through the respective hospitals Management Committee. However, there is direct relationship with the Board Headquarters as occasion demands.

The day to day running of the Board headquarters is administered by the Chief Medical Director, with a team made up of heads of department. While each hospital is headed by Medical Superintendent in charge with various Hospital Management Committee (HMC) who are heads of department in the facilities to help manage the hospitals.

The Board undertakes and sustain development in the health sector, through regular monitoring and supervision of healthcare activities  ensuring gaps are immediately closed by innovations.

OBJECTIVES OF THE NASARAWA STATE HOSPITALS MANAGEMENT BOARD

  • To coordinate, supervise and monitor the structure and service of public secondary health service delivery in the state.
  • To ensure equitable distribution of qualitative and standard secondary healthcare facilities in the state.
  • To ensure easy access to secondary healthcare by people in the state especially at the rural areas.
  • To ensure an effective management of secondary healthcare services in the state.
  • To strengthen community participation in secondary health service delivery.

To ensure provision of the best possible preventive and curative medical services to the residents of the state and beyond.

To provide uncompromised excellence in healthcare delivery for the populace through teamwork.

An integrated community responsive healthcare system which provides qualitative, standard, accessible and affordable healthcare services for a healthy and productive populace.

PROGRAMS;

LIST OF PRORAMMES

  • IQSS ( Integrated Qualitative Supportive Supervision)
  • QQA (Quarterly Quality Assessment)
  • ROUTINE VISITS

IQSS: – This is carried out on monthly basis to ensure qualitative service delivery is maintained in accordance to global best practice.

WHY IQSS? :- The supervisors went to the facilities on monthly basis to mentor, coach and support the staff so as to achieve 100% care.

QUARTERLY QUALITY ASSESSMENT: – World Bank Assisted Programme under the Nigeria State Health Investment Project (NSHIP). This is done on quarterly basis to assess performance of staff and award marks which translate to money accordingly.

ROUTINE VISIT: – These visits are to monitor staff welfare, attend to disciplinary cases and offer superior guidance in each department as the need arises.

Each department is headed by a director who is appointed by the Board.

DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL SERVICES

The Medical department is headed by a Medical Doctor who takes charge of the activities of all Medical Doctors, Dental Surgeons/Dental Staff, Radiographers, Ophthalmologist/Optometrist and ensures that they work according to lay down rules and regulations.

DEPARTMENT OF ADMINISTRATION & SUPPLIES

The department sees to the day to day running of the Board, security and surveillance of staff and Government property and the general welfare of staff of the establishment. It also undertakes the processes of training/re-training of staff, appointment, promotion, registry activities and disciplines. In addition, the procurement and supplies of health commodities and consumables.

 

DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE & ACCOUNT

The department ensures that requisite rules and regulations that would guarantee probity and transparency in the control and management of public funds and resources of government are put in place.

It also handles and ensures revenues and records are kept according to best practices.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICALS SERVICES

The department ensures the availability of drugs and other consumables in all facilities, it also ensures pharmaceuticals inspection and monitoring, eradication of counterfeit, and fake drugs.

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH PLANNING RESEARCH AND STATISTICS

The department is responsible for the planning and development of strategies for effective implementation of Health Policies Plan, it is also responsible for collection, collation, analysis, reporting and storage of Medical Statistics. Monitoring activities in respect of set targets, preparation of quarterly and yearly reports and identification of training needs.

DEPARTMENT OF NURSING SERVICES

This department is responsible for planning for effective and efficient Nursing Services in all general hospitals and training.

 

DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SERVICES

The departments performs a wide variety of tests using the most current technology that aid in diagnosis and treatment of patients.

DEPARTMENT OF TECHNICAL SERVICES

This department is in charge of maintenance of hospital equipments and vehicles. Hygiene and waste management.
